Wednesday, April 16th

This week, Parishioners from Saint John Vianney Church in Gladwyne, Montgomery County, presented a $3,000 a year scholarship to a current eighth grade student from Our Lady of Port Richmond Regional Catholic School to attend any Archdiocesan High School for all four years.  This presentation was part of the Saint John Vianney Scholars Program.

During the presentation, Mr. Michael Greenly, Chairman of the Saint John Vianney Scholars Board addressed students in grades 4-8 and spoke about the scholarship program and the opportunity for the children to win the award in the future.    In addition, another board member Mr. Cosmo Denicola spoke to the children about being a home town success and how studying hard and getting a great education can lead to good things.  Mr. Denicola grew up in the area of Our Lady of Port Richmond and is now a businessman and one of the owners of the Philadelphia Soul, professional arena football team.

Since its official launch in 2012, the Saint John Vianney Scholars program has recognized 24 deserving students with a scholarship. The 2014 scholars come from the following Catholic elementary schools in the city of Philadelphia: Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish School, Our Mother of Sorrows/Saint Ignatius of Loyola (Independence Mission School), Saint Francis Xavier Parish School, Our Lady of Hope Regional Catholic School, Saint Mary Interparochial School, Visitation B.V.M. Parish School, Holy Innocents Area Catholic Elementary School, Our Lady of Port Richmond Regional Catholic School.

The mission of the Saint John Vianney Scholars Program is to provide financial and academic support to children who are involved in their community and motivated to excel in school. The program hopes to provide many students with scholarships in the coming years as well as introduce this program to other parishes in the Archdiocese. Through their partnership with the Connelly Foundation, they are also able to provide the scholarship awardees with additional resources.
