Teachers at Two Parish Elementary Schools Learned to “Teach Like a Pirate” This Summer

Friday, August 29th

This Summer, teachers at Saint Bernadette Parish School in Drexel Hill (Delaware County) and Saint Patrick Parish School in Malvern (Chester County) continued learning and professional development in a unique and collaborative way.

Teachers at both schools read the book, Teach Like a Pirate, by Dave Burgess. The book highlights embracing your inner pirate through: Passion, Immersion, Rapport, Ask and Analyze, Transformation, and Enthusiasm. Using “Edmodo,” a social learning platform website, teachers from Saint Bernadette and Saint Patrick then asked/answered questions, shared ideas and gave examples of how they would implement new techniques from the book into their classrooms throughout the new school year.

In addition, teachers took Teach Like a Pirate with them on vacation. They took pictures reading the book at the beach, dressing up like a pirate with their grandchildren and even took the book with them while visiting “Pirates of the Caribbean” at Walt Disney World.

The learning, connections, and collaborations that took place in the professional development summer book club connected over 40 educators between the 2 schools. Reading and reflecting about Teach Like a Pirate was an energizing experience for everyone who participated.
